Mangakino Constable Murray Stretch Killed In The Line Of Duty
Police officers nationwide are mourning the death of Mangakino constable Murray Stretch, killed in the line of duty.
The 38 year old officer was bashed to death as he responded to a burglary at a local cafe on Wednesday the 26th May 1999.

Deputy Commissioner Barry Matthews says police across the country are filled with a mix of sadness and anger at the senseless death of their colleague.

He says constable Stretch's death is an absolute tragedy, and brings home the risks faced by police.

Deputy Commissioner Matthews says two other Mangakino officers have been temporarily stood down from duty.

Murray Stretch is survived by his partner, his former wife and their two sons, aged 19 and 16.

He is the 25th officer to be killed while on duty, and the fourth to be slain since 1990.

Police are preparing to storm a house where at least one of the people thought to be linked to the killing of Constable Murray Stretch is believed to be hiding out.One man is currently being questioned by police in connection with the slaying.Detective Sergeant Colin Matthews will not comment on that man's connection to the killing.He says police believe the man could have witnessed the attack on Constable Stretch.Detective Sergeant Matthews says the police Armed Offenders Squad is preparing to close in on a Mangakino property.He says police have reason to believe the occupants of the house can help with the inquiry.
