Crime Prevention - Guns
People like to keep guns in their homes for various reasons - hunting, target shooting or as a collection. Society requires that gun owners must be "fit and proper" to own and use firearms and keep firearms secure. Under the Arms Regulations every person in New Zealand who owns a firearm must have a firearms license issued by the police.
Details of the Arms Regulations can be obtained from the Police Arms Officer at your local police station.
Always handle a gun with care and use common sense. As a gun owner you should be aware that an intruder could use your firearms against you, or that your weapons could be stolen. The following guidelines on firearms safety are written into law:
Firearms must be kept out of the reach of children
Ammunition should either be stored separately from the gun, or the gun disabled by removing the bolt and storing separately

Gun owners must have a lockable store for guns at home. The firearms must always be locked there unless under the immediate supervision of the license holder
Guns are not to be left unattended in a vehicle.
