Friday 13 March 1998 brought media coverage that police were considering using sophisticated underwater searching equipment in their hunt for any trace of friends Olivia Hope (17) and Ben Smart (21). The pair has not been seen since the early hours of New Years Day 1998 after they were dropped off, along with a mystery man, onto a yacht moored in Endeavour Inlet off Furneaux Lodge.
Detective Inspector Rob Pope, the officer in charge of Operation Tam, set up to investigate the disappearances, said police were considering where they wanted to search, and what equipment they might need, including that which would be necessary for staff safety. He said police would like to eliminate everything, but that was not feasible. He would not get involved in speculation put to him by The Dominion that police wanted to find an anchor said to be missing from the seized sloop. He said police had not completed an inventory of the yacht’s equipment.
